El Basset Hound es un sabueso chaparrito, de cuerpo alargado con orejas largas,con uno de los mas desarrollados sentidos del olfato en el mundo canino y por lo regular sus colores son tricolor (negro, café y blanco), en la mayoría de los casos y bicolor (café claro y blanco), aunque pueden existir con mucho menor frecuencia el totalmente negro e incluso el muy raro Basset Blue, que mas bien es gris en vez de azul.

Originalmentese utilizaba  en Francia a finales  de 1800, la caza de liebre o zorros, muy apesar de que está muy lejos de ser veloz, su lentitud la compensa con la tenacidad, perseverancia y un carácter obstinado que le ha dado la fama de ser un perro tonto, difícil de entrenar, cosa que por supuesto está muy lejos de la realidad ya que de primera mano afirmo que de tontos no tienen uno solo de sus pelitos, me consta porque los nuestros, (sin ser yo  un entrenador experto), les he enseñado y se  sientan a la orden, saludan, se echan e incluso ladran cuando se les pide…todo es cuestión de lazos de comunicación fuertes,conocimiento de las preferencias de la raza y paciencia, un Basset hace. Muy bien,regresando a la historia, después, aún en el siglo XIX fueron trasladados algunos ejemplares a Inglaterra donde inició realmente así carismática popularidad, es por eso que se le llegaa considerar como originario de éste último país erradamente.

Teniendola oportunidad de observar algunos dibujos o descripciones de aquellosejemplares, pensaríamos que se trata de otra raza o al menos de otra varianteya que a pesar de que ya eran chaparritos y alargados y con piel holgada paraevitar heridas profundas,  ahora son mucho más pesados, de estructura ósea mucho más fuerte y gruesa, con evidente exceso de piel, aún más bajos,todo gracias a la selección de crianza y a las tendencias, ya que hoy día más bien se le da un valor de ornato más que para caza, aunque no afirmo que no se utilicenen nuestros días para cazar, obviamente para tales casos emplean a animales conpata un poco más larga y menos pesados por obvias razones, no obstante, bajo éstas condiciones más que la velocidad es necesaria la resistencia ya que para cuando el animal a perseguir se ha cansado corretear, decide esconderse, pero para nuestros pequeños amiguitos no hay refugio imposible de hallar y al llegarahí en vez de atacar hacen uso de su gruesa voz, llamando a su dueño, evidenciando a su presa sin moverse  y apuntando hasta que se ha concretado la acción.

Encuanto a su carácter son perros súper dóciles, amigables, en absoluto agresivos, no con las personas ya sea adultas o niños ni contra los de su raza e incluso otras especies, el Basset Hound vive de mucha agua, no mucho alimento, un pocode ejercicio pero eso sí, de cantidades exorbitantes de cariño y caricias…El Bassetes feliz al estar echado al lado de su dueño mientras le acarician su cabeza o sus orejotas.

Conlo que respecta a cuidados y salud es bastante más sencilla que otras razas por excelencia delicadas y enfermizas, claro, tomado en cuenta de que estamos hablando de ejemplares de raza pura y fina.

OREJAS.

Lainquietud principal de alguien que piensa adquirir un Basset Hound son las orejas, pero en realidad no representan mayor riesgo, en realidad son los oídos los que estarían en riesgo ya que siempre se encuentran cubiertos y proporcionan a las bacterias un ambiente idóneo para desarrollarse: temperatura, humedad y tiempo, siendo éste último al que hay que atacar tan fácilmente como limpiándoselas y/o revisándolas 2 o 3 veces al mes. Con lo que respecta a la longitud de las mismas y contrariamente a la creencia popular deque se deben lavar después de cada comida es un mito, claro está, si se les alimenta con calditos de pollo (grasos), arrocito, sopita y todo lo que en diminutivo vayamos dejando a lo largo de nuestros sagrado alimentos diarios, ahhh!!, entonces sí, porque al comer meten las orejas junto con el hocico al  plato y después de unos días nuestros cachorros tendrían  una especie de aretes bioparasitarios bastante antihigiénicos que además de ser potencialmente detonantes de dermatitis, acarrearían consigo un aroma no muy agradable, si, ya sé lo que están pensando, que bastaría con utilizar uno de esos platos para perro en forma de cono especialmente diseñados para cánidos de orejas largas, bueno, si el objetivo es solamente que no se ensucie las orejas entonces sí, pero silo que queremos es una solución integral para el sano crecimiento y desarrollo de nuestros Bassets, entonces atacando de raíz los posibles riesgos de salud tendríamos que empezar por la comida no creen?...es por eso que en nuestrocriadero alimentamos a nuestros chaparros exclusivamente con croquetas decalidad Súper Premium  y agua purificada,que es  tan o más importante que laalimentación en sí ya que dependiendo de la calidad de éste vital líquidodependerá a su vez, la calidad de vida que nuestro amigo tenga en sus últimosaños de vida.

OJOS.

Lasiguiente preocupación de alguien que piensa en adquirir un Basset son los ojosy es que a consecuencia del peso de la piel, los párpados se estiran causando así una de sus características más peculiares: La mirada triste…bien, en realidad muchas raza pueden llegar a tener eventualmente contratiempos oculares, tal es el caso del ojo de cereza que tanto afecta a los Beagles, la ceguerade los Dálmatas o en circunstancias más similares los Mastines o losBloodhounds; circunstancialmente tienen cierta tendencia a adquirir una conjuntivitis y están relativamente más expuestos al medio ambiente y ya en casos extremos podría incluso llegar a exponerse el tercer párpado y entonces si  se requeriría la atención de un Médico Veterinario Zootecnista calificado, pero eso no sucede siempre ya cada rato, mucho menos en todos los ejemplares, de hecho es solo un riesgo que implica de hecho a los menos.

UÑAS

Una preocupación más son las uñas que aparentan tener las uñas más largas del mundo canino pero en realidad todo es cuestión de proporciones  por el hecho de ser chaparritos no así pequeños, es decir, como bien me decía mis amigos de Kaaftha Hound´s Kennel:“…éstos no son perros pequeños, son perros grandes con patas cortas…”, por consiguiente, aunque sus “piernas sean cortitas, el resto de su cuerpo es “normal”, incluyendo las patas que en perspectiva se ven gigantes en proporción al tamañodel ejemplar y por ende las uñas también, en fin, en conclusión, el trato que se les debe de dar no va más allá del que se merece cualquier perro de cualquier raza y basta con pedirle a nuestro médico veterinario de cabecera que nos instruya para poder hacerlo nosotros una vez al mes, aunque éste es un periodo estimado ya que mucho dependerá del terreno en el que viva el perro, lógicamente si camina en piso de cemento la uñas se irán desgastando con la simple acción de caminar, en caso contrario, un cachorro que se desplace mayormente en tierra y/o pasto, necesitará más frecuentemente una ayudadita.

PIEL Y MANTO.

La piel es como la de los sabuesos en general, grasosa lo cual representa una tendencia a que huelan a “perro” un poco más que otras razas en un tiempo menor igualmente al de otras razas, sin embargo una solución al olor son los cepillados un par de veces por semana, los cuales además de vincular mas a tu mascota contigo, sirve y de mucho para deshacerse del pelo suelto y las células muertas que en gran medida ocasionan ése olor, ahora bien, con lo que respectaa la delicadeza de la piel, bastará bañarlo con un jabón de calidad (no antipulgas a menos que se diera el caso de que fuese infestado) y después del mismo, secarlo lo mejor posible frotándolo con una toalla para evitar primero que nada evitar que en los pliegues se acumule humedad y además, en la medida que permanezca menos tiempo mojado y/o húmedo, tardará más tiempo en retornar el famoso olorcito.
